The Truth About Natural Skincare Products

Just because it says "natural skincare products" on the label, doesn't mean that it's safe to use on your skin. Having looked at the ingredients of a large number of lotions, creams and other health and beauty products, many of them contain known or suspected carcinogens.

Natural skincare products can be safe and effective if the manufacturer puts your health first. Health care researchers obviously understand how our skin functions and are able to create products that work safely and effectively. However the use of cheap ingredients is a very common practice used to keep production costs down, leaving more money to be used towards the company's advertising and marketing campaigns. Not only that, but most skincare products contain inexpensive "natural" compounds that inhibit the skin's natural rejuvenation process. Practically all of them contain common allergens, such as preservatives and perfumes.

Celebrity endorsements and the licensing fees to use designer names can be very costly. On a side note, fashion designers do not create their own cosmetics. Instead they sell their name, to be used on skin care and other product lines.

Your skin needs the same things that the rest of your body needs; rest, nourishment and clean water. Everything we need for our skin's good health is available naturally. Natural health and beauty products that are safe and effective are available. With a little common sense and research of your own, you can achieve good, natural skin health.

We all know we should eat right, drink plenty of purified water, exercise regularly and get plenty of rest. We also know that we need to avoid overexposure to the sun, since it's the primary source of skin cancer. But do we have to exfoliate or use chemical peels? The answer is no, we don't. Besides, these processes can be damaging to our skin and cause your skin to become sensitive where it had not been previously.

So, what ingredients should we looking for? Glad you asked...

Dermatologists suggest that the best natural skincare products are those that moisturize, protect, prevent free radical damage and reduce the effects of aging. The best natural moisturizers are olive, jojoba, grape seed and palm oil.

Active peptide proteins counter the effects of aging. Antioxidants prevent free radical damage. Vitamin B5 provides natural protection against sunburn, while natural vitamin E has been shown to increase skin cell proliferation and promote new fiber production.

Interestingly, companies that use naturally occurring vitamin E, rather than the synthetic version, do not need to use additional preservatives. Because natural vitamin E is such a powerful antioxidant that it effectively protects the other ingredients in the compound from becoming rancid.

An extract from kelp inhibits enzymatic activity that causes lower levels of protein in the epidermis. There are only a few natural skincare products that contain all of these ingredients in high enough levels to truly be effective.

You should be aware that some manufacturers include minute amounts of these good, healthy ingredients, simply so they can list them on their labels. Yet the amounts are so small, their effectiveness is nil. Tricks of the trade, you know!

Not surprisingly, the natural skincare products that use these naturally healthy ingredients were not designed by a cosmetic company, but a health supplement company. Look for them and you won't be disappointed, and your skin will thank you!
